The purpose of this post is to go through the races of WoW so you understand what the racials do for your character and which races can play which class.
The races in WoW are split into 2 factions and these 2 factions cannot communicate with one another. The factions are Alliance and Horde. The main thing to think about when choosing a faction is if your friends play one faction, it would be best if you choose the same so you can talk to them.
First and foremost about choosing a race is choosing the one you want to play. Even though each race has racials that may help a certain class, the benefits are not really that large so you can really play whatever you want.
Alliance Races:
Humans
Gnomes
Night Elves
Dwarves
Draenei (only available if you have the Burning Crusade expansion)
Horde Races:
Orcs
Trolls
Tauren
Undead
Blood Elves (only available if you have the Burning Crusade expansion)
